Chain of Command AAR: Operation Husky - "Scenario Seven - Attack & Counter-Attack"

Last Saturday Max and me had our monthly game of Chain of Command putting Max Bersaglieri again versus my US Airborne.
The Bersaglieri had to recapture a village occupied by the Airborne, while the Airborne had to take the important ridge near Gela in Sicily in order to secure the beachheads.

This time we played our 7th game of CoC and so had suitably chosen "Scenario Seven - Attack & Counter-Attack" (from the Lards magazine "Christmas Special 2013").

Max drew a sketch map and sent it to me so I could prepare the table:
Different stages of preparing our gaming table.

The idea behind Scenario Seven is the defender immediately launches a counterattack to retake lost ground while the enemy attack is still in progress.
An ideal setting for Sicily.

Scattered elements of the US 82nd Airborne had taken a little village near Gela and a platoon of Bersaglieri have the mission to retake this village while a platoon of the Airborne needs to take the hills overlooking the village.

Map showing the initial positions

Both sides could count on 12 Support Points (Max rolled a 3 on the Support List) and the Bersaglieri had an additional 7 points because my higher Platoon Force Rating.
This enabled my Airborne to field not only an additional squad of rifle infantry (average) but even a Sherman!
The Bersaglieri could count on a Semovente, a PaK, Light Mortar, Flamethrower team and a Pre-Game Barrage!

End of the Patrol Phase

and the positions resulting from it.

The Bersaglieri move forward

on both flanks!

On my left I could bring a squad of Airborne into position to defend the orchard, followed (after some unsuccessful dice rolls because of this Pre-Game Barrage!) by the Rifle Squad.

After concentrated fire from the 60mm mortar, snipers and rifle squad, the Bersaglieri squad on my right flank has to retreat and is able to recover its wounded commander too.
However, this is not without consequences for their Force Moral (dropped from 8 to 6).

On my Left the Bersaglieri retreat to a position which seems to be better to defend ...

The situation at a glance.

A Sherman from the 2nd Armoured Division arrives to bring much needed support to the hard pressed Airborne troopers.

As he is advancing to the village the Sherman is hit by a round from the Italian Pak and immobilised!

The Italians made a big mistake - leaving the light mortar and the PaK unsupported!
Two of my squads used an opportuntity (2 rolled 6s meant a double round for me) and stormed the center, destroying both enemy units at once!

With this the Bersaglieri lost one of their JoP too, but my Airborne had barely time to consolidate their positions. First they got hit by the Flamethrower of the Italians accumulating casualities and shock ...

... followed by a desperate attack of the Bersaglieri squad from my right flank.
The Americans managed to throw back the Italians after some bitter Hand-to-Hand combat but were barely able to survive this.
Luckily for me Max not only lost the Junior Leader of this squad but his Senior Leader too and this finally dropped his Force Moral to 0 so his Bersaglieri finally had to quit the Battlefield and my Airborne could take these important heights.

It was a hard fought victory for the Airborne and without the mistake of the Italians of leaving the centre wide open and unsupported, my Airborne would never have been able to advance so aggressively and storm onto the heights.

The Paras had payed a heavy toll as they had lost nearly 50% of the infantrymen dead or wounded and a badly damaged Sherman; a true Pyrrhic victory.

"Hell on Wheels" - US 2nd Armoured Division in 15mm: The completed Weapon Squad

With the Mortar Team and Junior Leader painted and based, the Weapon Squad is complete now and so is my 15mm US Armoured Platoon 💪

Miniatures are mostly Battlefront, with a printed 3D Breed to complete some missing poses.
This Platoon will be used for Chain of Command, Battlegroup and 'O'-Group.

Weapon Squad consisting of 2 MG teams, Mortar team and the Squad Leader.

"Hell on Wheels" - US 2nd Armoured Division in 15mm: 2nd MMG-Team is now finished too 💪

My US Armoured Platoon in 15mm is still growing with the 2nd MMG team finished now, so just the Mortar team and the Junior Leader to command the Weapon Squad are still left to paint.
Miniatures are Battlefront again, with the odd printed figure (STL from 3D Breed) as a small addition here and there.

Ready to use it for Chain of Command, Battlegroup and 'O'-Group.

"Hell on Wheels" - US 2nd Armoured Division in 15mm: 1st MMG-Team done

The first of the two MMG teams for my US Armoured Platoon in 15mm has now also been completed.
The figures are again from Battlefront, reinforced by a printed figure (STL from 3D Breed).

The MMG team consists of 5 figures for CoC - the 2 figures on the additional base are then considered an optional loader team for Battlegroup.

The additional Base on the left acts as a Loader Team for Battlegroup.

"Hell on Wheels" - US 2nd Armoured Division in 15mm: 2nd Squad ready to serve

And the 2nd Squad is done now and so the infantry squads of this US Armoured Platoon are ready for action (HQ, 1st and 2nd Squad); the weapon squad with the two MMG teams and the mortar team are already on my painting table.

Battlefront plastics again, this time I used Lavender flower tufts on all bases for easy identification on the battlefield.

Chain of Command AAR: Operation Husky - Attack on an Objective

Last Saturday Max and I met up for our monthly CoC game, this time at Roll the Dice, a tabletop shop with lots of tables to rent for games.
We chose "Attack on an Objective" as the scenario, Max wanted to attack another village defended by my Airborne with his Bersaglieri.

Thanks to my FR of +4 and that of his Bersaglieri of -4, he was already guaranteed 8 support points, plus the 8 additional points rolled, which gave me 4 support points.
The Bersaglieri were thus supported by a FOO with a mortar battery, an AB41 armoured car, a Brixia 45mm mortar and a 20mm anti-aircraft gun, while my Airborne could only count on the FOO and some of the mortars of their regiment.

We both started at 9 for Force Morale: Max rolled a 3, I rolled a 1 (with +2 because of Elite).
So my Airborne didn't seem to be particularly motivated today ...

All quiet on Sicily ... at least for now

Situation after patrols made contact and with the resulting JoPs established

FOO desployed in one of the houses and a lone 60mm mortar team ...

The Bersaglieri push forward, accompanied by the 20mm FlaK, the source of increasing pain for my airborne.

Isolated 45mm Brixia in the background, maybe he has lost the way? A few moments later after a salvo from my Airborne squad it is gone ... first blood!

But there is no respite as an armoured car advances against the positions of my Paras.

Unequal Firefight with mounting casualities on my Paras as the low hedges provides no cover against the HE from the 20mm.

So my FOO has to call in a barrage from the mortar battery.

In the meantime more Bersaglieri push on from further North and lay down Covering Fire against my Paras in the South.. But at least one of their squads had have enough after fired upon from the Paras and the battery and breaks. Unfortunately not the nasty FlaK ...

But somehow the contact to the battery got lost and the barrage ends abruptly after just a few salvos (Max used a CoC-Dice) and the Bersaglieri had all their 3 Squads deployed, pushing my Paras harder and harder.

Casualities mounting, my 2nd squad had lost his LMG team ... the situation is getting increasingly desperate for the Paras.

Second try for another barrage ... but much too far away to cause harm ...

The odds are getting higher and higher.

We had to stop at this point because the Roll the Dice was closing.
Both sides had suffered heavy losses, although the Bersaglieri were able to cope with them much more easily than my expensive Paras.

However, the force morale of the Bersaglieri had fallen to 4 too, while that of the Paras stood at 6 - but one of the Para squads would not be able to hold out for much longer.

We agreed on a draw, as the pendulum of fortune could easily swing in favour of either side.

"Hell on Wheels" - US 2nd Armoured Division in 15mm: 1st Squad

After a little break with painting historical miniatures I´m back on track and so the 1st Squad joins the platoon.

Miniatures are all Battlefront plastics, used white flower tufts on all bases for easy identification on the battlefield.

The complete 1st squad, Squad leader is single based for CoC, where he acts as Junior Leader (JL)
